Three Sisters Loop Hike

By Terri Straub

My go-to conditioning hike starts at Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall, one of the few places left where there is still good parking. Statistics are approximately 5.5 miles, 1000′ gain, 2 – 2 1/2 hours.  The hike offers ocean views, but no shade, mostly easy trails, a little pavement and two steep stretches.

From the picnic benches head south across the field to find the Nike trail and continue south on this trail. When it ends head east on the Alta Vicente/Salvation Army Trail parallel to Palos Verdes Drive South.

When that trail ends, you will have to walk a short distance east along the street. Just past Terranea way the Three Sisters trail begins on your left up the big dirt stairs. Follow it to the junction with McCarrell Canyon Trail. Take this steep trail all the way up to the McBride Trail at the top.

Stop to catch your breath. Enjoy the beautiful views of the Pacific, and when it’s not too cloudy, Catalina Island. On the way down turn left at the Barkentine Trail, follow it back to the Three Sisters Trail and return the way you came.
